Jewish life begins and ends in the home, not in the synagogue. This should seem pretty obvious since Jewish people, like most people, spend most of their time in their homes eating, sleeping and just plain living. Because of this, Jewish people have developed a simple book, called a bentcher in Yiddish but commonly spelled bencher in English, that contains specific prayers, blessings and songs to enhance the spiritual, traditional and cultural lives of Jewish people within their homes.
